Preparation for the sacraments is not grade specific and involves preparation in addition to grade level Religious Education classes. Worshiping with the parish community at Mass and regularly attending religious education classes are both essential for a child’s preparation for the sacraments. Children who are doing both may prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist when they reach the age of reason, typically in the second grade.
However, while there may be “typical” ages at which children prepare for each sacrament, reception of sacraments is determined by a child’s readiness, not age. The Pastor and Director of Religious Education will meet with parents to discuss plans for preparing children who have not participated consistently in the parish religious education program, and for children beyond the usual age established by the Archdiocese for the sacrament. At minimum, children are expected to have participated in religious education in the year prior to preparing for a sacrament.
Preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation precedes preparation for Holy Communion. For each sacrament (Reconciliation and Eucharist), parents are asked to attend two parent meetings and receive materials for preparing their child at home. In addition, prior to the celebration of the sacrament, children attend the Prep Day, and, for First Eucharist, children also attend a rehearsal.
Families requesting sacramental preparation for their child are asked to mark their Religious Education registration form accordingly so that additional information can be provided. Families requesting sacraments for a child attending Catholic School are also asked to complete and return a religious education registration form. Please note that there is a separate materials fee for sacramental preparation programs. More details will be provided at the parent meetings.
