Through the Sacrament of Anointing, Christ strengthens the faithful who are afflicted by illness, providing them with the strongest means of support. Jesus showed great concern for the bodily and spiritual welfare of the sick and commanded his followers to do the same. The celebration of this sacrament is an opportunity for the deepening of the faith of the community who can witness the faith and devotion of those being anointed.
This is a ministry of comfort. Through Anointing, the sick person is reminded that Christ and the Church are in communion with his suffering. The Holy Spirit shares the blessings of health, trust in God, and strength against temptation.
“Is there anyone sick among you?” This question - found in the New Testament Letter of James - gives the response that the sick should call for the priests of the Church who are to pray over and anoint the sick with oil in the name of the Lord. Never hesitate to call the Parish Office to ask for prayer and the Anointing of the Sick prior to surgery or when diagnosed with serious illness. This Sacrament should not be simply looked upon as the "Last Rites," but as a powerful instrument of God's healing for the soul, spirit, and body.
If someone is dying or near death, please call the Parish Office for pastoral assistance. Mention that this is a Sacramental Emergency.
